Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai

Formerly known as the Atomic Energy Establishment, BARC is a premier, multi-disciplinary nuclear research centre carrying out advanced research in Nuclear Science and Engineering and related areas. Other than R&D support for power generation, BARC also extends its expertise to chemical processing of spent fuels, safe disposal of nuclear wastes etc. Advanced research in physical, chemical and biological sciences is also pursued to a larger extent.

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)

Established in March 1988 as a Scientific Society of the Department of Information Technology, C-DAC is primarily an R&D institution involved in design, development and deployment of advanced IT based solutions. The activities of C-DAC have diversified over the years. C-DAC in particular carries out sponsored R&D projects in the public field.

Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai

Founded in 1962, IMSc is a national institute for research in frontier areas of mathematical and physical sciences. The institute offers a graduate research programme in which a selected group of students pursue their Ph.D. work and it also hosts a large number of scientists at the post-doctoral level. Research at IMSc is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy. Other than the student hostel, the institute provides housing facilities for married students and long-term visitors.

International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad

Formerly known as the Indian Institute of Information Technology, IIIT carries out advanced research in information technologies and their societal, scientific, industrial and financial applications. The Institute also conducts education and training programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and works in close cooperation with industry leaders.

Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), Gujarat

An institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, IPR is involved in research in various aspects of plasma science including basic plasma physics, research on magnetically confined hot plasmas and plasma technologies for industrial applications. Apart from research, post doctoral fellowships and summer school programmes are also conducted at IPR. The first indigenously designed and built tokamak reactor of the country was commissioned here in 1989. Another steady state superconducting tokamak SST-1 is under fabrication. IPR is the nodal institute for India's participation.in ITER.

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore

Established in 1989 by the Department of Science and Technology, JNCASR pursues scientific research and training in six major areas of frontier science and technology. The centre also offers a wide spectrum of training courses and has acquired the status of a “Deemed University”.

National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Delhi

Established in 1947, NPL is one of the oldest laboratories of CSIR. The main activities of NPL include research and development, consultancy, sponsored and contract research, calibration and testing.

Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of the Indian space programme, PRL carries out fundamental research in selected areas of Physics, Space and Atmospheric Sciences, Astronomy, Astrophysics and Solarphysics, and Planetary and Geosciences. The Laboratory, coming under the Department of Space, has several experimental and computing facilities spread over four campuses : The Main Campus at Navrangpura and the Astronomy Center at Thaltej, both in Ahmedabad, as well as the Infrared Observatory at Mount Abu and the Solar Observatory at Udaipur, in Rajasthan. From its very inception PRL offers a doctoral programme in which students with Master’s degrees are admitted. Till date about 250 students have obtained their Ph.D. from PRL.

Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai

Established in 1945, around 400 scientists are presently working at TIFR in various disciplines grouped into three major schools: the School of Mathematics, School of Natural Sciences and the School of Technology and Computer Science. The Institute also has several field stations and research facilities in different parts of the country. It runs a Graduate Programme leading to a Ph.D. degree. In some subjects, M.Sc. degrees are also offered. TIFR acquired the status of a deemed university in 2003.
