The 7th Science Circle Lecture will be
organised on December 18th, 2006 at India Habitat Centre, New
Delhi. Dr. Asit K. Biswas, Stockholm Water Prize Laureate
2006, and Advisor to Government of India will deliver a talk
on “Water Management in India: Opportunities and Constraints”.
The lecture will be followed by informal discussions and a
get-together. |

DFG has opened a new office in Delhi with a branch at
Hyderabad. The official opening of the Delhi office took place
on November 04, 2006 followed by the Inauguration of the
Hyderabad branch on November 07, 2006. The most important task
of the new office is the intensification of bilateral
scientific cooperation between India and Germany. The newly
founded German Centre for Research and Higher Education,
housed in the same premises as the Indo-German Chamber of
Commerce in Nyaya Marg, will have representations of the
German
Academic Exchange Service, DAAD and the
Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, AvH, apart from the DFG.
DFG has signed a Programme of Cooperation (PoC) Agreement for
the period of 2007 - 2009 with
DST. |

German Academic Exchange Service DAAD signs
a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University Grants
Commission
On the occasion of the opening of the
German Centre for Research and Higher Education in New Delhi
and the visit of Prof. Max Huber, Vice President, DAAD, the
German Academic Exchange Service signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the University Grants Commission (UGC) to
strengthen the scope of cooperation in the field of Humanities
and Social Sciences. The calls under this MoU will open in
December 2006 and will be announced on the
UGC and
DAAD
website. |

Germany will hold the EU Presidency from
January - June, 2007. Science and Technology will be an

The fifth Indo-German Winter Academy will
be organised from December 9-16, 2006 in Digha, West Bengal.
This year, the academy will focus on "Fluid-Thermal Sciences",
"Numerical Methods and Simulation of Engineering Problems" and
"Semiconductor Technology and Materials". Students from the
IITs and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg will prepare
lectures on predefined specific topics and have discussions
with the participating professors from the IITs and the
University Erlangen - Nuremberg, Germany.

The European Commission, under the Asia-Link Programme, is funding a series of seven European Higher Education Fairs (EHEF) to be held in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The objective of the EHEFs is to provide a framework for further pursuit of higher education cooperation between Europe and Asia, enhancing mutual awareness between the two regions. The EHEF in Delhi will be organised by the DAAD at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi from November 24-26, 2006.

A Policy Workshop on “Chennai Waterways:
Past, Present and Future” will be organised by Centre for
Environmental Studies, Institute for Ocean Management and
CPEES & TEQIP in collaboration with the Department of
Environment (DoE), Government of Tamil Nadu, German Technical
Cooperation (GTZ) and the German Centrum Für Internationale
Migration and Entwicklung (CIM) at the Anna University,
Chennai. Discussions will be held on the recent situation on
Waterways in southern India. A talk on the European
Experiences will be delivered by Prof. H.D. Olbrisch,
University of Lüneburg followed by a round table discussion on
" Furture Steps for the Development of Chennai Waterways ".

A training programme on “Modern Tools in
River Water Management” will be organised at the Centre for
Environmental Studies, Anna University, Chennai. The
objectives of the workshop will be to provide an overview
about the basic techniques and information for monitoring of
waterways, exchange information on the practices already
adopted in the management of European waterways and discuss
legal frameworks and their importance for river conservation.

International Seminar on Intellectual Property Education and
Research, Hyderabad, November 16-17, 2006
An International Seminar on Intellectual
Property Education and Research will be jointly organised by
the
World Intellectual property Organisation (WIPO), the
Max
Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Munich and the
NALSAR University of Law at Hyderabad on November 16th and
17th, 2006. Amongst others, the major themes to be discussed
will be Intellectual Property and Agriculture, IP and Health:
Patents in Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, IP and Culture:
Copyright Issues, Protection of Geographical Indications, IP
and Information Technology.

A German Delegation led by the Secretary
of State at the Ministry of Economics and Labour of Saxony-Anhalt,
Germany is visiting India from November 12 - 18, 2006. Amongst
the twenty members of the delegation, are also representatives
from the field of Biotechnology and Agriculture. During the
stay in Delhi, the State Secretary met, amongst others,
representatives from the
Department of Biotechnology,
Department for Agricultural Research and Education and
Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources, Government of
India. Around 30 biotech and plant breeding companies are
based in Saxony-Anhalt where about 1500 people are engaged in
more than 250 research projects. Various research institutes
like the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry, the Max
Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology and the Max Planck
Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology also mark a strong
presence in this region.

Siemens AG and the
German
Academic Exchange Service, DAAD have launched a new scholarship
programme addressing post-graduates from Asia as well as
Eastern and Middle Europe. The scholarship will enable
researchers to pursue their work a subject that covers one of
the central research fields at Siemens.
