CDFD Hyderabad & ZINF Wuerzburg A new
Indo-German Liaison Office Infectious Diseases Research has
been established in CDFD Hyderabad and ZINF Wuerzburg since
October 1, 2005. The office will provide the basis for a
long-term, structural cooperation constituting the German Research
Centre for Infectious Diseases at the University of Wuerzburg,
the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in Hyderabad
as nodal points. Main goal of the office is the development of bi-
and multilateral research projects in the area of Infectious
Diseases Research comprising also participation from small and
medium enterprises.

A high ranking delegation from the German Research Foundatin (DFG), led by Vice President Prof. Hacker and subsequently by Deputy Secretary General Dr. Axel-Hubertus Zienicke visited Bangalore, Hyderabad and New Delhi from 14th till 22nd November 2005. The DFG is planning to open an office in New Delhi in 2006. In preparation, they met with government authorities as well as research institutes.

An Indo-German workshop on recent trends in the development of PET (Positron Emission Therapy) Radiopharmaceuticals was organised at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Defence Research & Development Organisation and the International Bureau of the German Research Ministry. Eight German scientists/clinicians working in this field attended the workshop.

DAAD fellowships for Disaster Prevention and Management
The research
fields are: Geology, Geoinformatics, Disaster Preparedness and
Prevention: Social Sciences, Public Sector Management,
Medicine: Public Health, Epidemiology, Trauma Psychology,
Regional Planning, Resources Management, and Ecology, Civil

Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowships The special
programme jointly run by the Helmholtz Association and the
DAAD is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and
postdoctoral students. Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowships offer
excellent young scientists and researchers from all around the
world the opportunity to do research at a Helmholtz Centre in
Germany. The Helmholtz Association, Germany's biggest research
organisation works on solving the grand
challenges faced by the society, science and industry and
concentrates on systems of great complexity in the

Leibniz-DAAD Scholarships provide young foreign academics and
scientists with an opportunity to carry out a research project
or a programme of education and training at a

The fourth Indo-German Winter Academy will be organised from 11th-18th December 2005 in Jamshedpur. This year the academy will focus on Fluid-Thermal Sciences, Semiconductor Technology and Material Sciences. Students from five IITs will prepare lectures on predefined specific topics and will have intensive discussions. Participating professors would come from the IITs, University of Lucknow and University Erlangen - Nürnberg, Germany. |

Investigator Award, launched for the first time in 2003 aims
at encouraging and enabling outstanding young researchers from
all over the world to work in Europe. The award promotes
scientific excellence, with wide international recognition, by
supporting these distinguished researchers to develop and
pursue an independent research career.

ESPACE is a new Master’s course in English offered at the Technical University Munich (Technische Universität München) in collaboration with the Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich, University of Federal Armed Forces, Munich and German Research Centre for Aerospace (DLR). It is a 2 year international Master’s course and a Ph.D. programme focusing on Space Engineering, Earth System Science from Space, Remote Sensing and Navigation and Positioning. |

Prof. M. Steiner, Director of the Hahn Meitner Institute in Berlin and representative in the field of Renewable Energy of the Helmholtz Foundation (HGF) visited India from 22nd October 2005 - 7th November 2005. In Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi Prof. Steiner discussed collaboration possibilities between the Helmholtz Foundation and Indian Institutes in the field of Energy.

The Department of Science and Technology deputes every year since 2001, a team of young scientists to the Annual Meeting of the Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany. This year, 24 young scientists from Physics, Chemistry and Medicine and Physiology were sent for the meeting. The Group departed from India on June 25th, 2005 and visited Germany for two weeks. The first week was sponsored by the Lindau Committee for the meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students and the second week by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It included visits to various premier German research institutes. |
