Inauguration of the Science Circle: On the anniversary of Indo German Science Cooperation, the Indo German Science Circle was inaugurated on October 6th, 2004 in New Delhi by the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, and the Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, Kapil Sibal. The website of the Science Circle was equally launched at the ceremony.

In the presence of Chancellor Schröder and Minister Sibal, an MoU was signed between Max Planck Society (MPG) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) establishing institutional commitment of MPG in India.

Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn in India: German Minister for Education and Research visited India this October. Mrs. Bulmahn accompanied by high ranking science delegation comprising among others the presidents of the Max-Planck-Society, the Helmholtz Research Association and the Secretary General of the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD visited Indian Institute of Information Technology, Indian Institute of Science, Infosys and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bangalore after having meetings with Mr. Kapil Sibal and Minister Arjun Singh in Delhi.

First Science Circle meeting

First Science Circle meeting to be held on December 16th, 2004 at 6.30 p.m., Gulmohar Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi. Prof. Dr. Hartmut Michel, Nobel Laureate for Chemistry, Director, Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics, Frankfurt will give a lecture on “Membrane proteins: importance, structures and mechanisms”. The lecture will be followed by a discussion and High Tea.

President of German Research Society / Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in India

Prof. Ernst Ludwig Winnacker, President of the German Research Society (DFG) visited India along with Dr. Joerg Hacker, Vice President DFG, and Prof. Huber, Vice President DAAD and other members of the delegation from Oct 27 – Nov 7, 2004.

The DFG is the central research organisation that promotes research at Universities and other publicly financed research institutions in Germany. In the framework of the “Indo German Sci-Tech Forum” the Delegation visited various Institutes like IIT Delhi, IIT Chennai, IISc Bangalore, University of Hyderabad holding lectures and conducting workshops on Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases and Environmental Research and Technology.

MoU between DFG and Department of Science & Technology DST
Prof. Ramamurthy, Secretary, DST and Prof. Winnacker, President, DFG, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on October 29th, 2004. Broadening the scope of existing Agreements between DFG & DST, the MoU enlarges cooperation by adding individual-based to the hitherto project-oriented research funding. Bilateral seminars, joint research projects, preparatory and short term visits are to be supported with a special focus on young scientists. A Joint Advisory Committee will be set up to review and steer the implementation of the MoU.

DFG Research Training Groups (Graduiertenkollegs):
Research Training Groups are university training programmes established for a specific time period to support young researchers in their pursuit of a doctorate. The research training groups provide these doctoral students with the opportunity to work within a coordinated research programme run by a number of university teachers. In cutting edge areas of Science Joint Research Training Groups could now be setup building up on existing links between Indian and German Scientists.

Visit of Prof. Kern, President, and Prof. Tietze, Institute Director, University of Göttingen to India

Prof. Dr. Horst Kern and Prof. Tietze, Georg-August-University, Goettingen visited India in October this year. During the visit, meetings were held at among others Indian Institute of Mathemetical Sciences and IIT, Chennai and IISC, Bangalore to discuss possibilities of cooperation between University of Goettingen, one of the oldest and most famous German Universities and Indian Centers of Excellence.
 

Visit of Prof. Streffer from University of Essen to India

Prof. Christian Streffer, Coordinator of Indo German Scientific Cooperation visited India in November 2004. On the Agenda of his visit to Kalpakkam, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi, were among others The Department of Biotechnology, The Centre for Genomic Application, Indian Council for Medical Research and IITs.
 

Leading edge innovations

The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft undertakes applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprises maintaining over 80 research units at more than 40 research locations throughout Germany. To complement their ongoing research work, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft has recently compiled a list of leading edge fields of innovation.
