India will be the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair to be held from October 04-08, 2006. Apart from a series of events throughout the year, thirty authors will present their work among them Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy and Javed Akhtar. The presentation will specially focus on authors who write in one of the twenty four other languages of India apart from English.

The Department of Science and Technology deputes every year since 2001, a team of young scientists to the Annual Meeting of the Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany. The Group visits Germany
for two weeks, the first week is sponsored by the Lindau
Committee for the meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students and
the second week includes visits to various premier German
research organisations and is organised by German Research
Foundation (DFG). 27 Indian students have been selected for
the 2006 visit. |

The Biotech Trade Fair Bangalore Bio would
be organised from June 07-09, 2006. The main attractions of
the show would be an International Conference, a B2B Forum,
CEO Conclave, European Union Day etc.

economies in the world and has witnessed significant change in
the last decade. The Hannover Messe presented India as its
partner country for 2006.

A delegation of the representatives of the TU9 visited various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from April 02-06, 2006. TU9 is a joint body of nine major Technical Universities of Germany viz. Aachen, Berlin, Braunschweig, Darmstadt, Dresden, Hannover, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Munich. The visit organised by DAAD was intended to give new impetus to the cooperation between TU9 and the IITs.

Directors from six Max Planck Institutes visited India from March 5-10, 2006. The focus of the delegation was on Immune- and Molecular Biology, Infection Biology and Developmental Biology. The Delegation visited institutes in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi.

Under the provisions of the DST-DFG MoU
signed in October 2004, a meeting on Microbiology, Immunology
and Cell Biology was organised at the International Centre for
Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). The event,
co-sponsored by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR)
brought together the DFG and Max Planck Delegations comprising
of eminent German scientists and Indian counterparts from ICMR
institutes, ICGEB, National Institute of Immunology etc.

On 23 June 2005 the German federal and state governments agreed on an “Excellence Initiative” to promote top-level research in Germany. The total budget for this initiative would be 1.9 billion Euros for a period of five years which will be split between three lines of funding
