Master Sandwich Programme
The IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Master Sandwich Programme forms
part of the BMZ financed scholarship programme for the advanced
qualifications of future managers in developing countries. The aim of the
IIT Master Sandwich Programme is the advanced qualification of carefully
selected above average students and post graduates in the natural,
engineering and economic sciences. Particular features are the language
preparation course, the supervision of a guide from the respective IIT as
well as a mentor from the German host institution during the study visit,
the practical orientation and the guarantee of recognition of the period
of study in Germany.
The IIT programme commenced in 1998 and is for those enrolled in a Master
of Technology (M.Tech) or M.S. (Research) programme at IITs Madras, New
Delhi, Kharagpur, Bombay, Roorkee or Kanpur. Applicants must be able to
show that they achieved above average results in their Bachelor degree,
GATE test and first two semesters at the IIT. Prior to leaving for Germany
they must take part in a 6 week German language course.
Scholarship holders will be placed at one of the 7 technical universities
(RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, TU Munich, U Karlsruhe,
U Stuttgart) participating in the programme. The maximum length of the
study visit cannot exceed 9 months, of which approx 6 weeks are to be
spent on an intensive language training course, 6 months research work
agreed between the German and the Indian supervisors, and, where
possible/requested up to 2 months on an industrial placement. The Master
degree will be taken at the home institution in India.
Under the IIT Master Sandwich Programme 70 scholarships were granted in
1998 and 90 in 1999. Due to cut back in BMZ funds only 60 shall be granted
in 2005. The programme is planned to continue although the number of
scholarships on offer will depend on the availability of BMZ funding.
The German and the Indian supervisors of the scholarship holders may visit
the partner institution, with the visit being partly financed by the DAAD
in the form of a travel subsidy. The subsistence costs of the German
supervisor will be borne by the relevant IIT.
During various visits to Germany, IIT Directors have expressed their
positive views thus cementing the Indo-German relation and enrichment of
study possibilities.
Currently 65 IIT students are in receipt of a scholarship.
IIM Master Sandwich Programme
Following initiation of the programme by DAAD in 2000, Indian Institutes
of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow have
entered into arrangements with the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (Handelshoschschule
